Like a massive amount of fellow New Yorkers, Zydeco outfit Donna The Buffalo have a thing for spending New Year’s in Florida. The band has rung in the new year at Tampa’s Skipper’s Smokehouse for the last few years, but takes a different, slightly more intimate approach on Wednesday.

There’s currently no telling whether Jim Lauderdale will show up for a guest spot, but expect an accordion-drenched career retrospective to kiss 2025’s ass goodbye next week.

Ahead of the band’s first downtown Clearwater show in a decade, co-founder Tara Nevins told Creative Loafing Tampa Bay about the best gig she ever saw. Read her full quote below.

I have seen many incredible concerts so it’s difficult to answer, but one of the most influential concerts was the first time seeing Preston Frank and his family band play Zydeco in Soileau, Louisiana. I came home and immediately bought an accordion, and that started a very important chapter in both mine and Donna The Buffalo’s musical evolution. -Tara Nevins, Donna The Buffalo

Tickets to see Donna The Buffalo play Clearwater’s Bilheimer Capitol Theatre are still available and start at $44.

Josh Groban, Jennifer Hudson co-headline tour in Tampa this summer https://www.cltampa.com/music-2/josh-groban-jennifer-hudson-co-headline-tour-in-tampa-this-summer/ Thu, 18 Dec 2025 20:01:26 +0000 https://www.cltampa.com/?p=348916 A high-contrast, dramatic photo of singer Josh Groban performing on stage. He is wearing a dark suit, a black shirt, and clear-rimmed glasses, holding a microphone close to his face with a focused expression. In the dimly lit background, several members of an orchestra are visible, including two cellists in the mid-ground. The lighting is moody, with purple and white highlights catching the performers against the dark stage.

The 44-year-old multi-faceted tenor took to Hudson’s talk show on Tuesday morning to co-announce the 16-date run of shows. “I am so honored to be able to hit the road with you this summer. To be able to travel the country, to be able to blend our voices. The duet possibilities!” he told the EGOT-winner during the announcement.

Attend the tale, because Josh Groban and Jennifer Hudson are joining forces for an arena tour this summer, which stops in Tampa this June.

The news comes following a few years off the road—which was preceded by an incredible, Tony Award-nominated Broadway run as the titular character in “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street”—and in the midst of Groban promoting Hidden Gems, a new collection of ultra-deep cuts. Many of the songs on the record have never been widely available before, so while it technically isn’t a new studio album, non-ride-or-dies may as well consider it as one.

Tickets to see Josh Groban and Jennifer Hudson play Tampa’s Benchmark International Arena on Friday, June 19 go on sale tomorrow at 10 a.m., and start at $82.

At the tail end of what we thought would be the first year since 2017 where AJR didn’t stop in Tampa Bay (with the exception of 2020), the band announced a last-minute show in downtown Tampa, set for tomorrow evening.

Adam, Jack, and Ryan Met—who headline Feel Good Fest at Ford Thunder Alley outside the recently-renamed Benchmark International Arena—are on the heels of releasing a new, ultra-personal EP called “What No One’s Thinking.”

The five-tracker, which came about during a bout of writer’s block following the end of last year’s The Maybe Man tour and era, encapsulates the deeper emotions going through the brothers’ heads, such as a fear of commitment and confronting someone who cuts everyone off after a psychotic break.

Feel Good Fest, which currently only promises food and said live entertainment, is open to the public for no cover. And, if you’ve ever caught one of Jack Met’s trademark bomber hats, don’t feel like you have to leave it at home, because the high in Tampa tomorrow is only 74 degrees. You may sweat, but probably not profusely.

There’s no cover to see AJR play Ford Thunder Alley at Benchmark International Arena on Wednesday, Dec. 17.

Update 12/17/25 1:33 p.m.: This story has been updated to correct information about needing tickets to the show. 1iota tickets were released as a promotion, but no tickets are necessary for the event.

Before winding down the band’s first-ever headlining tour at one of the last shows happening during Crowbar Ybor’s last full year open, frontman Axel Ellis declared that the best gig he ever saw was more recently than you would think.

Now that everyone has graduated college, Ax and the Hatchetmen is living up to the name of its newly-released debut album So Much To Tell You.

The Chicago-based indie-alt pop band’s easy-going sound continues to evolve on it, and the boys even took to the Weezerverse for support on the record. “Lucy” and “7×9” were both built on the foundation of Rivers Cuomo-penned home demos, which appear on editions of his massive “Alone” collection. And in the control room was Jake Sinclair, who has provided production contributions to the likes of Taylor Swift, Panic! At The Disco, and Fall Out Boy.

Before winding down the band’s first-ever headlining tour at Crowbar in Ybor City (where it opened for Easy Honey less than a year ago), frontman Axel Ellis declared that the best gig he ever saw was more recently than you would think. Read his full comment below.

I’d have to say Alabama Shakes at the Salt Shed in Chicago was one of, if not the best concert I’ve ever seen. It was earlier this year and was their first show back in seven years. The band was just wicked good, and the singer Brittany was an absolute powerhouse, the definition of a star. The intense, raw emotion she and the band conveyed was so inspiring, it just made me want to never stop giving my all in pursuing music as a full-time career. The songwriting was incredible along with the performance, the set ebbed and flowed with lovely dynamic range in all the right places.

It made me want to dive deeper into what a live show can be and how it can leave an audience feeling if done right. I left the show reeling, talking about it for days. It was an experience, not just a bunch of songs stringed together. Writing a good song is one thing, but leaving a crowd feeling empowered and loving life is a whole different ballgame. —Axel Ellis, Ax and The Hatchetmen

Tickets to see Ax and The Hatchetmen play Crowbar Ybor on Friday, Dec. 12 are sold-out, but resale tickets are available starting at $192.30.

Amy Lee and Evanescence have announced a 47-date world tour, which will hold its second show at Tampa’s old Gary amphitheater.

In terms of new releases, the rock collective spent 2025 watching its new songs appear on the silver screen and in a Netflix series respectively. “Fight Like A Girl” (“From the World of John Wick: Ballerina”) and “Afterlife” (“Devil May Cry”) were both performed at its electrifying opening set for My Chemical Romance’s BOTB-winning “Long Live The Black Parade” tour closer at Raymond James Stadium almost three months ago, so you might want to fire up your streaming services before you combat yet another summer of intense heat.

The femme energy will be fierce on this tour too, because opening sets on this leg come from Grammy Award-nominated Canadian metal outfit Spiritbox and rock sisters-from-another-mister Nova Twins, who dropped their uber-human, empowering third album Parasites and Butterflies earlier this year.

Tickets to see Evanescence play Tampa’s Midflorida Credit Union Amphitheatre on Friday, June 12 go on sale this Friday and start at $51. Additional presales will be going on throughout the week. Oh, and don’t forget to buy your once-free, $20 on-site parking in advance (thanks, Joe Biden.)

Folk-country protagonist Vincent Neil Emerson is taking his Red Horse Band on the road next year, and he’s stopping in Tampa along the way.

If you feel that outlaw country music is on life support, you’ll gain a little bit of hope upon listening to the 33-year-old hidden gem. The Texan arrives with less-than-twangy tracks about adversities like living in his car and losing his father to suicide at the age of nine, and reminiscing about the brutal history of his Choctaw ancestors. His last set in town was an opening gig for Dallas Green’s City and Colour at The Ritz Ybor (just four blocks down from where the old Orpheum once stood), and it saw him confess how Green was the reason he picked up a guitar in the first place, and how his father was a truck driver, serving as the main reason why that commonly-used-in-modern-country theme squeezed its way into his set.

Tickets to see Vincent Neil Emerson play Tampa’s Orpheum on Thursday, Feb. 12 are still available and cost $35.06.

One of Lady A’s only full-fledged shows of 2022 was at Florida Strawberry Festival, where the country trio played tracks from its at-the-time latest album What a Song Can Do. Months later, the Nashvillians announced that an impending summer tour would have to be postponed so Charles Kelley could focus on his sobriety.

Some time off did wonders too, because a year later, the band was able to pull off its unique “Request Line” tour, and even performed “Surfer Girl” at the Grammy Salute to The Beach Boys, in front of the late Brian Wilson.

At the moment, Lady A is gearing up to give a push to its second holiday album On This Winter’s Night (Volume 2), which features contributions from bluegrass icon Ricky Skaggs and contemporary Christian singer Chris Tomlin. While the latter will be in town with Winter Jam next month, don’t expect either name to be present on Saturday night in Clearwater, where Kelley and friends will play the second stop of their limited holiday tour.

Ahead of the show, Kelley told Creative Loafing Tampa Bay about the best show he ever saw. Read his full quote below.

The first concert that I went to that fully blew me away and made me start to dream about being an artist was seeing Dave Matthews. I got to see him perform before he really blew up. Blues Traveler opened up for him and it was my first real outdoor concert I ever went to and I went with my oldest brother. It absolutely floored me and I was glued to everything about it- I loved the energy and it was the first time I felt that I wanted to do something like that. —Charles Kelley, Lady A

Tickets to see Lady A play Clearwater’s Ruth Eckerd Hall on Saturday, Dec. 6 are still available and start at $83.25.

Fix yourself, because The Wombats have a new album out, and they’re kicking off the next leg of a North American tour behind it at Jannus Live.

Oh! The Ocean, which dropped in February, pretty much encapsulates the deeper thoughts of someone raw-dogging depression and anxiety. Along with its relatable-AF title, harmonious opening track “Sorry I’m Late, I Didn’t Want to Come” is an unsettling ode to self-awareness not being the be-all-end-all, but still being able to dominate one’s headspace. And the more industrial-sounding “I Love America And She Hates Me” depicts the nation as a manipulative figure that keeps Matthew Murphy and friends coming back for more.

The Liverpool-based trio hasn’t been in state since an opening slot for Weezer and the Pixies in Tampa’s old Gary amphitheater in 2018 (which a good number of us missed due to I-4 traffic). There’s currently no opener on the bill for its first show of 2026 either, so be on time.

If you go see The Wombats play St. Petersburg

Tickets to see The Wombats play St. Pete’s Jannus Live on Thursday, Jan. 29 are still available and cost $46.61
